Two Lesson Plans Based on a Family Lesson (Pages 22-25) You and Me 1

PREP: Tape the Family Song lyrics to the board.

'Mum, dad, and brother, too

This is my family, how are you?

Grandma, grandpa, and sister, too

This is my family, how are you?' x 2


Prop up the book on the board at PAGE 22-23. (or blow it up, if possible)

Write on the board, Tom mum dad grandma grandpa Lucy brother

a book a cake an apple a pen a crayon Jojo

'Who has a book?' G r a n d _ _ has a book.

'Who has a cake?' G r a n d _ _ has a cake.

'Who has an apple?' _ a _ has an apple.

'Who has a pen?' _ u _ has a pen.

'Who has a crayon?' L _ c _ has a crayon.

'Who has an apple and a cake? _ o _ o has an apple and a cake.


Write the numbers 1-10 on the board with the words for numbers and 5 + 5 = 10, 10 - 5 = 5

WRITE: 1 red, 2 green, 3 blue, 4 yellow, 5 black - on the board.


Point to the book (You and Me 1), which you should prop up or stick onto the board.

Go through and point to the characters in the picture. Mum, dad, brother, Lucy, sister, grandma, grandpa

Point to the items in the picture and get students to repeat. A book, an apple, a cake, a pen, a crayon.


2. Go through the Family song lyrics, line by line. Play the song – TRACK 51 - and encourage students to sing along.


Play TRACK 50

3. NOW throw the ball to a student and ask, 'Who has a ball?'

'XXX has a ball.' Repeat several times until students grasp the basic concept.

Ask the questions on the board. Ask students to raise their hand if they know, but tell them (through the assistant, if necessary) not to shout out the answer.


4. PHONICS

Once completed, ask the students to sit by the Ferris Wheel and go through the basic short vowel sounds with them, without adding a consonant. (Further details available by contacting QualiTESOL).


5. COUNTING AND COLORING

Ask students to sit in front of the numbers on the board. Count with the hands 1 through 5. 5 plus 5 is 10.

Introduce the JOJO coloring activity and highlight the numbers and colors in the board TO FINISH.


LESSON TWO

PREP: PAGES 22, 23 and 25 from the Pupil's Book required.

On the board, write, 'How old are you?' 'I'm ______.'

Show them a picture of teacher, PAGE 37 from the Activity Book 'How old is teacher?' He's 48!


1. WARMER

Reintroduce the family members: mum, dad, brother, grandma, grandpa, sister.

Go through the Family song lyrics, line by line (if required).

Play the song – TRACK 51 – again and encourage students to sing along.

Play again and repeat if they enjoy it!


2. Now get students to sit in front of the Ferris Wheel again. Go through the short vowels. (Perhaps introduce some of the consonants and get students to repeat). 'Speed up' the Ferris Wheel, as required. Do not introduce any actual (real) words yet (next week, perhaps).


3. Revert to PAGE 25 of the Pupil's Book and show them the picture of the monkeys.

Show them Jojo's cousins, then play TRACK 58.

How old are you? I'm 1

How old are you? I'm 5

Play the CD track a second time and ask the question on the board, holding up the picture of teacher.


How old are you?

Go around the class, select volunteers or call out names.

Once the phrase has been perfected naturally, show students the drawing activity (on the back of the JOJO coloring activity) and tell them they will need to complete the picture as teacher has done. This activity can be found in the Activity Book in the You and Me 1 package.

Support and assist with the activity, including writing of names.
